HYPERTENSION

High blood pressure/hypertension is a silent killer. You may feel no symptoms yet the body is being destroyed by it. It is a condition where the blood pressure is elevated more than 130/80. If uncontrolled, it causes damage to various organs in the body resulting to other diseases. The organs usually affected are the heart, brain, kidneys, eyes, which leads to blindness and peripheral blood vessels. If left untreated, the disease will progress and will lead eventually to death.

High blood pressure occurs when blood volume increases or blood vessels constrict or narrow forcing the heart to work harder to supply oxygen and nutrients to various organs in the body.

Be aware, factors leading to hypertension include: smoking, being overweight, lack of physical activity, too much salt in the diet, too much alcohol consumption, stress, older age, genetics, family history of high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, adrenal and thyroid disorders.

Lifestyle modifications and medications are ways of treating high blood pressure doctors agree.
