Getting Enough VITAMIN D?

Doctors described the human bone as a living tissue in constant turnover. The key is maintaining the balance between bone resorption and formation. Calcium is vital for bone health, however, vitamin D is just as crucial to this delicate balancing act. The human body needs an adequate supply of vit D to absorb calcium wand phosphorus another mineral essential for bone health. Without the vit D, the intestine can only able to absorb 10% - 15% of dietary calcium and about 60% of phosphorus. Therefore, with sufficient vit D, the body is able to maintain optimal calcium and phosphorus levels well.

Vit D deficiency also causes loss of muscle mass and muscle weakness that can compromise a person's ability to maintain balance and stability. This in turn contributes to an increased risk of falling and fractures. Sunlight exposure is our major source of Vit D. We need regular, sensible sun exposure to jumpstart vit D production in the skin.

Fatty fish, egg yolks, liver and cheese are good sources of vit D, mainly cholesterol.

Individuals with inadequate intake of vit D containing foods and sunlight exposure particularly post menopausal women with osteoporosis may have to consider vit D supplements.

BE aware, studies show that calcium combined with vit D supplementation can reduce the risk of fracture to older adults.
