MOCK FUNERAL for Venice dwindling population

Hundreds of people turned out on Saturday in Venice for a symbolic funeral procession to highlight the Italian city's dwindling population. A cortege of gondolas carrying empty coffins, decorated with wreaths, crossed the city to the sound of songs and poems in the Venetian dialect.

The events organizers said they wanted to draw public attention to the problems experienced by the northeasten city where the population recently fell below 60,000. In Venice, houses cost twice as much as they do on mainland and it's too much for the middle class. "We are asking for more action from the city authorities to help residents. We do'nt want the tourist monoculture we have at the moment. We have to develop other areas" - citizens group told AFP
