RESVERATROL in Grapes

A compound that is commonly found in grapes known to deliver some protection for the heart is called resveratrol. The following are the benefits we can get from this compound.

Getting Enough VITAMIN D?

Doctors described the human bone as a living tissue in constant turnover. The key is maintaining the balance between bone resorption and formation. CABBAGES.
Cabbages (like bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts) sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinols, which are potent anti-cancer substances. These molecules can prevent precancerous cells from turning into real cancer cells. To prepare cabbage, steam briefly or stir-dry quickly with little olive oil. Do not boil them or you'll destroy their anticancer properties.

GINGER.
Ginger has long been used to treat nausea, vomiting, cough, colds, headache, stomach ache and arthritis. It's pungent odor comes from gingerols and shogaols, which are likely responsible for its anti-nausea and anti-vomiting effects. US billionaire supports Aquino

CHINA faces diabetes epidemic

The study published in The New England Journal of Medicine estimates that more than 92 million men and women are living with diabetes in China, or almost 1 in 10 adults in the world's largest population. Given it's large population, China bear a higher diabetes-related burden than any other country.

The report said another 148.2 million were considered to be pre-diabetic, or showing early symptoms of developing diabetes, a condition that could lead to cardiovascular disease, China's leading cause of death. It said that effects associated with rapid pace of growth and change in the world's third largest economy were a factor.

The ageing of the population, urbanization, nutritional changes, and decreasing levels of physical activity, with a consequent epidemic of obesity, have probably contributed to the rapid increase in levels of diabetes in China, the report said. The study was based on a sample of more than 46.000 adults aged 20 years or older from 14 provinces and municipalities which the authors said was representative of the entire population.

The report said 9.7% of the adult population, accounting for more than 50 million men and 42 million women, lived with diabetes while pre-diabetes affected 15.5% or 76 million men and 72 million women.

Broader SMILE, longer life

Researchers in Michigan studied 230 photographs of US major league baseball players who started playing before 1950 and grouped them according to their smiles. The players were rated as "no smile"if they were just looking deadpan at the camera; as "partial smile"if only the muscles around the mouth were involved in their grin; or as "full smile"if the mouth and eyes were smiling and the cheeks were both raised.

The players pictures were taken from the 1952 Baseball Register, a listing of professionals that is packed with statistics such as year of birth, body mass index, marital status,, and career length, which reflects physical fitness. The wealth of statistics allowed the researchers to control for other factors that could affect lifespan.

Of the players who had died as of June 1 last year, those in the no-smile category lived for an average of 72.9 years, those with partial-smiles - just the mouth involved- died at age 75, while the full-smile players lived to the ripe old age of 79.9 on average, the study showed.

The extent that smile intensity reflects an underlying emotional disposition, the results of this study is congruent with those of other studies demonstrating that emotions have a positive relationship with mental health, physical health, and longevity, the study says.

It was unclear, the authors said, if the baseball players had smiled spontaneously or if their grins were produced under order from a photographer. But in any case, the fewer individuals had full smiles - 23 - than partial or no smiles (64 and 63 respectively) which indicated to the researchers that even if smiles were produced on request, their intensity reflected the player's general underlying disposition.

Women on the pill may live longer

Women who took the birth control pill beginning in the late 1960's lived longer than those never on the pill, a new study says. British researchers observed more than 46,000 women for nearly four decades from 1968. They compared the number of deaths in women on the pill to those who never took it.

In the study, women on the pill generally took it for almost four years. Experts concluded the pill cut women's risk of dying from bowel cancer by 38% and from any other diseases by about 12%

Slightly higher death rates were found among women under 30 on the pill but that began to be reversed by age 50. Doctors are not sure exactly why the pill may lower death rates. It contains synthetic hormones to suppress ovulation, which may have some role in preventing certain diseases.

Previous studies have found the pill does not raise the risk of dying. It also may protect against ovarian and endometrial cancer, but slightly increase the chances of breast and cervical cancer. It may also be that women on the pill are somehow healthier than those that aren't.

Because the study only observed women on the pill compared with those who weren't, researchers weren't able to make any hypotheses about cause and effect.

Be aware, in the longer term, the health benefits of the contraceptive pill outweigh any risks, Richard Anderson, a gynecologist at the University of Edinburgh said.

The art of letting go II

Love is economics too. There is a supply of emotion because there is a demand for it. Irregularities between the supply and demand of emotion create a commotion. The demand should only meet the supply. Venturing into an amorous relationship involves investment of time, effort, energy, body and life. Therefore, there should be equitability between partners. If you settle for anything less, then that is tantamount to doing a great disservice to yourself. That is not love.

When you are down and out, alone and lonely, do not go to the one you love. Instead go to the one who loves you. Go to the right places where good people congregate. There is more to life after separating from the guy/girl you idolized and whom you gave your all. Don't blame yourself for giving your all because that means you can retrieve it again at a hundred percent basis. Don't hide crying. It's alright to cry because you get hurt. Tears cleanses the soul and purifies the spirit. But never run around like a headless chicken. Do not give the person who hurt you have the opportunity and satisfaction to see you suffer. You will not authentically love someone unless you authentically love yourself. If we go by the rule of authentically, there's no love loss. This is because at the end of the equation, you will find yourself -scathed but fighting, bruised but still waging a conscious sure-win battle of conquering your own fears, weakness and loneliness.

If you are the aggrieved party, part of moving on - though it may come later on the process is - forgiving the person who hurt you. Forgiveness and coming back are two different things. You can forgive him but that does not mean you have to come back to each others arms again.

On the other hand, if you have aggrieved someone, learn how to apologize. Those who do not know how to say Ï am sorry, are insulting our capacity to forgive.

The ärt of letting-go

In the department of romance, the art of letting go, is mathematically proportional to the art of self-preservation. Letting go and preserving one self are crafts that can be mastered by people who want to get out of the crude and rude vicious cycle. These skills are the summation of one's conscious conviction -albeit prepared and punctured with nerve cracking and heart wrenching feelings - to be happy and complete to one's silence and solitude. Love makes the world go round they say and there is no remedy to love but to love more. Loving yourself more by letting go of someone who loves you less makes you a better person.

The reason why many people live in an unhappy life is because "the unhappy people have not truly and exceptionally love themselves." They have killed themselves by loving others and forgetting that they have their own life to live and love.

Many suffer from broken-heartedness because they do not want to move on. Why hold on your love for someone who will not love you? If the love of your life has another love already, please be brave enough to penetrate the deep and depressing recesses of your life or else you'll be broken-hearted. Empower yourself. Tell yourself that you will only love him/her until the day he/she loved you. Remember, no one has the monopoly of power.

The art of letting go starts from the ultimate conviction that you love yourself more and you believe that you don't deserve to be hurt. After all, happiness is a personal responsibility.

If you're into a relationship, and you continually hurt each other, it comes to a point when you have to make a decision whether or not love is enough to salvage the relationship. If hurting situation is recurrent, have wisdom to know when to hold and when to fold. Stress is caused by two opposing forces pulling against each other. We usually think of this something negative, but some kinds of stress are actually essential for life. Take gravity for instance - it puts stress on your body, but you can't live without it. You'll never be able to eliminate all stress from your life. You wouldn't want to. But you can reduce the intensity of stress and you can learn to manage it.

When a violinist tightens the strings on a violin, she applies stress on them. The strings are pulled in two directions. The capacity of a string to be stretched is called "tensile strength". But if the strings are strong, the violinist is able to produce beautiful music.

People are like that. When pulled in two different directions some people snap from the stress. Others, however are able to handle the stress and use it to produce something beautiful. The difference is the spiritual strength of the individual.

2. PRAY. Prayer is a powerful stress- reliever that you can use any time of the day. Tell him how you feel. Psalm 42:3 When I am afraid, you LORD, know the way out.

3. PRIORITIZE. Pinpoint what's really important and what isn't. You can not do everything, so clarifying your priorities is essential to reducing stress. HAPPINESS and your HEART

" If you aren't naturally a happy person, just try acting like one" said Dr. Karina Davidson of Columbia University Medical Center. Davidson and colleagues used a five-point scale to measure people's happiness. They then statistically adjusted to account for things like age, gender, and smoking. For every point on the happiness scale, people were 22% less likely to have a heart problem. The study was paid by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and others.

Research said happy people are more likely to have a healthier lifestyle. It could also be there is an unknown genetic trait that predisposes people to be happy and have less heart disease. Happiness itself could result in a healthier heart compared to other emotions such as stress or depression.

Stress often releases hormones that can damage heart muscle. Stress can also cause blood vessels to open too wide, allowing plaque build-ups to break off and clog the arteries.

Be aware, the other benefit of trying to be happy is to have a better mental health.

BREAST CANCER CURE

Roche announced recently its new long-term follow up-data from two large pivotal studies evaluating adjuvant trastuzumab in HER2 positive early-stage breast cancer presented at the CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. Both studies, N9831 conducted by the North Central Cancer Treatment Group and BCIRGOO6 performed by the Breast Cancer International Research Group consistently showed that -trastuzumab - reduced the risk of the cancer returning by about one third in women with HER2 positive early breast compared to patients receiving chemotherapy alone. In both studies, at least 80% of women receiving one year of trastuzumab were alive free of the disease at five years follow-up.

The trials confirmed trastuzumab's favorable cardiac safety profile at long-term follow-up. In addition, both studies were seeking to answer questions the medical community has been contemplating regarding the best way of giving their patients trastuzumab treatment.

BCIRGOO6 evaluated trastuzumab in combination with anthracycline-based chemotherapy versus an anthracycline free regimen. The study showed that both approaches extended survival without the cancer returning as well as overall survival compared to chemotherapy alone.

Be aware, N983D1 is a US, Phase III randomised, multicentre, open label trial of one year of adjuvant trastuzumab. Patients with HER2-positive early breast cancer were given other chemotherapy alone, trastuzumab following chemotherapy (sequential) or trastuzumab at the same time as chemotherapy (concurrent).

WATER VAPOR drop may have lead to warming slowdown

The slowdown in global warming in the last few years may have been caused by a decline in water vapor in the stratosphere, a new report suggest. While climate warming is continuing - the decade of 2000 to 2009 was the hottest on record worldwide - the increase in temperatures was not as rapid as in the 1990's.

Balloons and satellite observations show the amount of water vapor in a layer about 10 miles (16 kilometers) high declined after 2000. The stratosphere extends from about eight to 30 miles (48 kilometers) above the Earth's surface.

The reason for the decline is unknown according to researchers led by Susan Solomon of the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration. Water vapor enters the stratosphere primarily from air rising in the tropics.

Be aware, water vapor is a potent greenhouse gas, and it's decline in the stratosphere would reduce the rate of global warming expected from other gases such as carbon dioxide, research said.

Strickly "NO VALENTINES"in Saudi

The Saudi religious police launched yesterday a nationwide crackdown on stores selling items that are red or in any other way allude to the banned celebrations of Valentine's Day, a Saudi official said. Members of the feared religious police were inspecting shops for red roses, heart-shaped products or gifts wrapped in red and ordering store owners to get rid of them, the official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

Red- colored or heart-shaped items are legal at other times of the year, but as Feb 14 nears, they become contraband in Saudi Arabia. The kingdom bans celebration of Western holidays such as Valentines Day, named after a Christian saint said to have been martyred by the Romans in the 3rd century.

Most shops in Riyadh's upscale neighborhoods have removed all red items from their shelves. A statement by the religious police, informally known as the muttawa, was published in Saudi newspapers warning shop owners against any violation. 'Those who don't comply will be punished,"the statement said without spelling out what measures would befall the offenders.

The Valentine's day prohibition is in line with Saudi's strict Wahhabi school of Islam that the kingdom has followed for more than a century. The birthplace of Islam also bans several Muslim holidays except the two most important ones because it considers them "religious innovations"that Islam doesn't sanction.

Be aware, many Saudi's who still want to mark the popular Valentine's do their shopping weeks before the holiday. Attitudes toward Valentines Day vary across the Arab world, with devout Muslims opposing the holiday as a Western celebration of romantic love that corrupts Muslim youth.

Year of the WHITE METAL TIGER

For the Chinese faithful, this is the start of their New Year, not January 1. This is because the Chinese Calendar is based on the cycle of the moon. It is celebrated on the second new moon after winter solstice which is around December 21. There really is no fixed date for that Chinese New Year but almost always it happened between late January and early February.

The year is named after 12 animals and they also go in a cycle. The animals are like the 12 Western zodiac signs (e.i. Cancer, Gemini, Virgo and Scorpio and include the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. That is the cycle in order , so based on this order we are on the third year of the 12-cycle.

To add to the confusion is the cycle of elements which are as follows: Earth, Metal, Wood and Fire. Last year was the year of the Earthen Ox, so that makes it the year of the Metal Tiger for this year. Next year (February 3, 2011) would be the Year of the Wooden Rabbit.

Ancient Chinese philosophers believe that a person's character is based on the characteristics of the guide animal and element of the year that he was born. Metal tigers (those born this year and on 1950) are said to enjoy standing out in a crowd. They are good looking but they definitely suffer from mood swings ad temper tantrums. They are known to jump to conclusions and to act too quickly without weighing the options or understanding the consequences. But they are assertive and competitive doing anything in order for them to achieve their goals.

Be aware, don't forget that this is but an assumption cooked up by ancient philosophers and does not necessarily mean that it's true. Always remember that you are what you make yourself to be.

Vit D cuts risk of colon cancer

Patients with the highest levels of vitamin D in their blood had a nearly 40% lower risk of colorectal cancer compared to those with the lowest levels. Vitamin D derived mainly from sunlight but also found in foods, plays a key role in bone strength by increasing levels of calcium in the blood

It is unclear whether vitamin D supplements are any more effective than a balanced diet or getting regular exposure to sunlight. Further work is needed to show whether the statistical link in the investigation is born out - and whether there could be any side effects from taking supplements or eating food fortified with Vitamin D.

Be aware, smoking, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, alcohol and eating red and processed meats had previously been established as factors in cancer of the colon and rectum.

Running BAREFOOT better than with shoes

Three-quarters of runners who wear shoes land squarely on their heels - about 1,000 times for every mile run. But even well-cushioned sports shoes that help distribute weight across the foot can not fully absorb the shock of these blows: 30% - 75% of regular runners each year suffer repetitive stress injuries.

By contrast, the vast majority of unshod runners don't hit the ground with their heels, landing instead on the sides or balls of their feet, the study found. The practice is especially common in several east African countries where long-distance running is nearly a national past time.

By not "hell-striking", barefoot runners avoid painful and potentially damaging impacts that concentrate the equivtalent of 2 or 3 times one's body weight on to a coin-sized surface. People who don't wear shoes when they run have an astonishing different strike. By landing on the middle or front of the foot, barefoot runners have almost no impact collision, research showed.

Be aware, up to now there has been little scientific evidence suppotring the claim that barefoot is better. Most people today think that barefoot running is dangerous and hurts but actually you can run barefoot on the world's hardest surface without the slightest discomfort and pain, the study found.

Well-covered bum & big hips "good for health

Carrying fat on the hips, thighs and bum, rather than around the waist, has a range of health benefits and actively protects against diabetes and heart disease researchers said. Fat around the hips and thighs is good for you but around the tummy is bad. A big bottom is much better than carrying fat around the waist, which tends to release more harmful fatty acids into the body, the research shows.

Belly fat also releases molecules called cytokines which trigger inflammation - raising the risk of diabetes and heart disease. But fat carried on the thighs traps these harmful fatty acids and stops them from latching on to the liver and muscles and causing a range of health problems, including insulin resistance. Although fat around the thighs and backside tends to burn slower and be harder to shift, it can release beneficial hormones which protect the arteries and help blood sugar control, the research showed.

Be aware, it is only recently that thigh fat and a larger hip circumference have been shown to promote health, that lower body fat is protected by itself. It is shape that matter - and as far as health is concerned, being "pear-shaped" is much preferable to being ""apple-shaped". In an ideal world, the more fat around the thighs the better - as long as the tummy stays slim.

HERCEPTIN against breast cancer

High-risk breast cancer patients with HER2-positive tumors benefit from receiving the targeted therapy herceptin while under going chemotherapy, new research shows. The reason why Herceptin is so valuable to patients who have locally advanced breast cancer is they have a very bad prognosis. The cancer are usually bigger. They may have spread in the lymph nodes in the armpits and they're usually not small enough to be cut out to preserve the breast.

When a patient with locally advanced breast cancer, the doctor treats them first with chemotherapy, to shrink the tumor, along with trastuzumab (Herceptin). Once chemo is completed - after about 6 months, it is easier to operate and remove the tumor. Then the patient is continued on Herceptin for a year, followed by radiation.

Previous research has shown that Herceptin with chemotherapy helped women with both early and metastatic breast cancer live longer. 71% of women who received Herceptin were alive without recurrence at the end of 3 years.


HYDROQUINONE update

When it comes to skin color desirability, there are 2 main schools of thought - the Sun Worshipers and the Snow Whites. Many of us know the dangers of basking under the sun one too many times, like your face looking more wrinkled, as if that wasn't bad enough, there's the potential risk of skin cancer.

On the other side, it is not a particularly uncommon aspiration for those who were born with darker skin to want to lighten up. The desire for a creamy complexion is a potentially dangerous one. The whitening lotions widely available on the market today claiming results in just days seem too good to be true for the naturally born tanned and they probably are.

Hydroquinone is the most commonly-used skin-whitening ingredient in the world, and has been widely used to treat hyper-pigmentation, age spots, melasma and the like - with proven effectiveness because of its potency. Sounds good, but not really. Studies have shown that frequent use of the products containing this have been linked to a medical condition known as "ochronosis" that causes the skin to become dark, thick and develop dome-shaped yellowish or grayish spots that are difficult to remove. Some studies also report abnormal functions of the adrenal glands and high levels of mercury in people who have used hydroquinone-containing cosmetics. Other side effects include loss of skin elasticity, poor wound healing, appearance of skin nodules, and fish odor syndrome. Hydroquinone is also a potent carcinogen.

Be aware, for the above reasons, hydroquinone use in cosmetic products has already been banned in Japan, the European Union, Australia and Canada. In the US, only products that contain 2% or less hydroquinone are available over the counter, while anything up to 4% require a prescription and supervision of a physician.

Binay Maharjan said that - " a smile is a glow on our face. It is more powerful than a bulb of one thousand watts and the warmth it gives can serve us more than any electric heater. We are not fully dressed until we wear a smile on our face. A smile has the power of liberating one from loneliness.

SITTING TOO MUCH could be deadly

Study suggest that people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die. While health officials issued guidelines recommending minimum amounts of physical activity, they have not suggested people try to limit how much time they spend in a seated position.

Research said that; after 4 hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals. Genes regulating the amount of glucose and fat in the body start to shut down. Even people who exercise, spending long stretches of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. People who exercise daily - but still spend a lot of time sitting - might get more benefit if that exercise were spread across the day, rather than in a single bout.

In a study published last year that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians about a dozen years researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, independently of whether or not they exercised. But it seems the more you can get up and interrupt this sedentary behavior, the better.

Be aware, figures from a U.S. survey in 2003-2004 found Americans spend more than half their time sitting, from working at their desks to sitting on cars.


The "HEROIC" Life of ERIC LIDDELL

Eric Liddell was born to Scottish missionary parents in Tianjin, Northern China in 1902. In 1908, Eric and his brother Robert were left in England for formal schooling. It was there where the athletic prowess of the two brothers was first discovered. Later on, they went to Edinburgh University where Eric earned the honor of being the top 100-yard sprinter and second-fastest 200-yard runner in the whole university. He also won the 100-yard sprint in the Scottish University Sports Competition.

Eric has a good attitude and sportsmanship. He would always shake each contestant's hand before a competition and wish him success. He sometimes volunteer to run the outside lane, which runners avoid. Although shy by nature, Eric volunteered to speak in gospel campaigns and it was there that he realized that God gave him the gift of fame to share His message to other people.

He then tried for the British Olympic team in 1923 and after winning the qualifying heat and finals, he was entered in the 100-meter and 200-meter races for the upcoming Olympic Games.
However, three months before the start of the Games, he learned that the heats for the 100-meter sprint were scheduled on a Sunday. Eric had never run and would never run on a Sunday because to him it was a day of rest and reverence for God. Because of his decision, some called him a traitor to his country. To resolve the issue, the British Olympic Committee asked him to consider running the 200-meter and 400-meter races, to which Eric agreed. During the games, it was Abrahams who won the gold medal for Great Britain in the 100-meter race. Eric subsequently won the bronze medal for the 200-meter race but was not expected to win the 400-meter race.

Eric honored God and God honored him indeed. To the amazement of many, he won the 400-meter over the much favored American and Swiss runners ad even set a new world record. He is an example of a man who used his talents and fame for the glory of His Creator. In the movie "The Flying Man" he said: "I believe that God made me for a purpose, but He also made me fast. When I run, I feel His presence".

After graduation, he went to China as a missionary. When World War II broke out, he gave up his opportunity to be released through POW exchange to a pregnant woman.

Once the matter is placed into the box, do not hold unto it by worrying about it. Instead, focus on all the wonderful things that are present in your life now.

If you find yourself stuck in the traffic, don't despair. There are people in this world for which driving is unheard of privilege.

Should you have a bad day at work, think of the man who has been out of work for years.

Should you despair over a relationship gone bad, think of the person who has never known what it's like to love and be loved in return.

Should you grieve the passing of another weekend, think of the woman in dire straits, working 12 hours a day, seven days a wee to feed her children.

Should your car break down, leaving you miles away from assistance, think of the paraplegic who would love the opportunity to take that walk.

Should you notice a new gray hair in the mirror, think of the cancer patient in chemo who wishes she had hair to examine.

Should you find yourself loss and pondering what life is all about, asking what is my purpose? Be thankful. There are those who didn't live long enough to get the opportunity.

Should you find yourself the victim of other people's bitterness, ignorance, smartness or insecurities, remember, things could be worse. You could be one of them!

WHEATGRASS to prevent blood disorders

Throughout history, the healing benefits of green foods have been recognized where mammals and aborigines have survived primarily on grasses and green plants when diseases strike. The benefits of various green foods seem related to their chlorophyll content. ASTHMA control and preventive measure

Asthma is a disease that affects the breathing passages of the lungs ( bronchi and bronchioles). It is caused by the chronic inflammation and narrowing of these airways resulting in difficulty in inhaling or exhaling. Extreme asthma can cause your lungs to take in volumes of air that are not adequately exhaled: this can result in respiratory failure.

While asthma cannot be cured, with early diagnosis, proper medication and treatment, it can be controlled. The condition should not prevent patients from leading normal and full lives. The basic symptom of asthma includes' chest tightness, cough, air hunger, and shortness of breath. There is a cough variant asthma that does not manifest the usual symptoms other than a dry cough. The cough is usually dry because the airway is too narrow to expectorate any phlegm.

If a person feels that he might have asthma, he should see a pulmonologist or doctor right away for testing and diagnosis. They will evaluate you on any or all of the following:
1 family history- a common factor for asthma to occur within the family
2 medical history
3 symptoms, how frequently these occur and improvement with medication
4 allergies
5 individual triggers that seem to set off asthma symptoms, which include dust mites, pollution
6 lung function

There are two different types of medication involved in asthma; controller and relievers

Relievers - act by opening your airways and allowing more air to pass through. They however
do not directly address the underlying problem of airway inflammation. Relievers are very good at alleviating symptoms immediately but are only a short-term solution to breathing problems.

Controllers - the more effective medicines for the long run, These medications target the main problem by addressing the inflammation and treating it instead of providing a quick fix. Controllers should be taken regularly at prescribed dosages.

BE aware, life as an asthmatic does not have to be difficult. It is important to know that asthma is not contagious or infectious. Also asthma course and manifestations can easily be controlled so that people who happen to have asthma can lead normal and regular unhampered lives not bound by any restrictions.

CANCER what to do about it

Taking time amidst a busy schedule to do breast self-examinations and physical examinations will prove to be powerful tool in ensuring that a person can remain breast-cancer free, or at least diagnosed early for better recovery. Before you decide on a course of treatment, you must have a deeper understanding of breast cancer and what the results of your diagnosis indicate. You must also understand which type or combinations of treatment will be best for you. The specific treatment will depend on your test results, age, general health and family history.

Cancer treatment options.
A number of treatment methods can be administered on patients to cure breast cancer, limit the spread of the disease and provide relief of symptoms which includes:

>Primary systemic therapy (neo-adjuvant therapy) - aims to reduce tumor size for breast con-
serving surgical treatment.
>Surgery - removing the tumor through a lumpectomy
> Adjuvant radiation therapy - high energy x-rays to destroy cancer cells
>Hormonal therapy - some breast cancers are dependent on estrogen (ER-positive) This kind
of therapy blocks the growth of ER-positive tumors.
>Chemotherapy - used as a component of treatment in both early disease and advanced disease
settings. A number of chemo drugs are used alone or in combination with other therapies
such as anthacyclines, taxanes, alkylating agents and oral chemotherapy capecitabine,
which lessens symptoms associated with chemotherapy and can be taken orally in the
patient's convenience, usually at home.

BE aware, instead of rushing through things, it is better to talk to your doctor and be pro-
active in your treatment and recovery every step of the way. Most breast lumps are harmless, with up to 3 or 4 lumps that are suspected of being cancerous turning out to be benign cysts,
fibromas or lipomas. If discovered early, breast cancer is highly treatable. Once breast cancer is diagnosed, surgery is often done to remove lumps. Various types of treatment are available, each with its own benefits or risks. It is best to discuss diagnostic procedures and treatment options with your physician and family.

EXERCISE varied effects

Exercise seems to simultaneously make people hungrier, yet more readily satisfied by a meal - and differences in these responses from person to person may help explain why some exercisers shed pounds more easily than others, researchers say.

In a study of 58 overweight and obese adults who started an exercise regimen, researchers found that exercise tended to boost participant's hunger before a meal, compared with their sedentary days. On the other hand, they were also more easily satisfied by their morning meal than they had been before becoming active.

But while both effects were generally at work across the study group, there were subtler differences between participants who were more successful in their weight loss and those whose extra pounds stubbornly hung on. In general, exercisers who did not meet their expected weight loss were both hungrier after fasting - that is, right before breakfast - and throughout the day, compared with their hunger ratings at the study's chart.

In contrast, those who were more successful in shedding pounds generally saw their pre-breakfast appetites increase after becoming active. But they were not hungrier throughout the day. The reason that some people are more successful (at weight loss) could be due to a lesser increase in appetite and the prevention of an increase in food intake. But the bottom line for new exercisers is that they should not throw in the towel if they start feeling more hungry than normal - or fail to shed as many pounds as they'd been hoping.

BE aware, other research shows that exercise has health benefits - like improved cardiovascular fitness, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol - even if weight loss is modest. Exercise is good for you, don't expect unrealistic weight loss and don't give up exercising just because of lower-than-expected weight loss.

BE HEART SMART

Studies have shown that signs of heart disease begin developing in childhood. It is a well-established fact that high blood cholesterol levels play a role in the development of coronary heart disease in adults. TAKE stock of what's inside. Once a month, pull everything out and separate the better-for-you foods from the rest. Choose more low-fat and fat-free dressing, condiments, sauces and tablespreads instead of full fat ones.

HIDE desserts. Stow away desserts and other indulgent foods in the crisper, so they're " out of sight, out of mind". Fruits and veggies should be kept on the refrigerator shelf where you can see and eat them.

SUBSTITUTE lower-fat foods for higher-fat ones. A simple substitution like soft margarine for butter over a week's time can save you an entire day's worth of saturated fat.

FREEZE foods in portion sizes to make healthy eating easier. Did you know the recommended serving of cooked meat is 3 ounces, similar in size to a deck of playing card? The standard service size for pasta is one cup (or the size of a walkman) and half a cup for vegetables (about the size of a tennis ball).

FREEZE fruit for fun. Freeze fruits such as bananas, grapes and orange slices to make them more fun to eat for children. Next time they want a sweet snack, offer them frozen fruit rather than ice cream.

BE aware, eating a diet with the right amount of calories that is low in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol is a balancing act. One way to assure a varied, healthy diet is to wisely choose foods everyday.

TV can kill- Australian research

People who spend more than 4 hours in front of the television each day have a far higher risk of dying early than those who limit their viewing, said Australian study. Watching the small screen for prolonged periods is also bad for your heart, according to the research published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Compared to people who watch less than 2 hours of television per day, people who watch more than 4 hours per day have a 46% higher risk of death from all causes, research said. They also have 80% increased risk from cardiovascular disease. Sitting down for long periods stops the body from using its muscles and adequately processing sugars and fats.

The findings come from a 6-year study into the viewing habits of some 8,800 Australians which stripped out the influence of other health factors such as age, sex, smoking, weight and exercise. Australians watch tv an average of three hours a day.

BE aware, the study found that even people who exercised regularly were potentially hurting their bodies by sitting down for extended periods.
